Beadwork is an effective, calming activity for individuals with autism. Beadwork enhances their fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination and cognitive development through structured, tactile engagement. It acts as a therapeutic tool for emotional regulation, and helps individuals develop patience and perseverance. Beadwork also fosters creativity, recognition of patterns and boosts self-esteem through task completion and talent development.
At KAA, beadwork is taught to our teenage and adult students. Through beadwork, our students learn to work with structure and routine – sorting beads, following patterns, and completing each piece step by step, trains the students to focus on the task at hand, and complete it, with patience and perseverance.
Although the students need prompting and coaching initially, over time, they show increased focus, need less prompting and take greater ownership of their work. Beadwork has also become a form of expression for our students, particularly for the less verbal ones. Their creativity shines through the colours and patterns in their beadwork. Some students are able to stay focused on their beadwork for extended periods, especially when they are immersed in creating patterns independently. And when the students see their finished products on display, their sense of pride and achievement is evident.
